Individual Health Insurance Vs. Group Health Insurance
Individual health insurance is very different from group health insurance in some respects. Many people have had group health insurance from a large corporate group plan and that is all that they have ever known. Many have never had to actually pick and choose between different insurance companies and different health plans as all of the decision making was done on their behalf by their employer. Here are a few quick things to keep in minding when searching for individual health insurance.
The underwriting for individual health insurance is different than the underwriting for group health insurance.
This is great news if you, your spouse and kids are healthy as individual health insurance rates are much cheaper than a comparable group health insurance plan. It could be a cause for concern if you have some health issues in your past as there is the possibility that the application will be declined due to what is called “pre-existing conditions” in your medical history. Most individual health insurance companies will look back into your health history going back about 10 years. If the application is on a fully underwritten basis and there are major health issues such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc. then the application will be declined. (What do you do at this point? Make sure that you keep your current coverage and elect COBRA benefits or any other form of continuation coverage and when that coverage expires you will want to look for a HIPAA eligible health insurance plan).
Individual health insurance is much cheaper than group health insurance.
Think of it kind of like; in individual health insurance the insurance company gets to pick and choose who they will extend coverage too. They choose those who are healthy and have the lowest risk to the company. Therefore, the rates are much lower than in a group health insurance plan where no matter who applies for coverage, whether healthy or unhealthy, they are offered coverage (and of course everyone that is unhealthy wants health insurance – this principle is called the law of adverse selection if any super technical people just love knowing the actual name of insurance principles). A good way to think about it is if you are healthy and on a group health insurance plan then you are in a sense subsidizing the cost of all of the unhealthy people on the group health insurance plan.<br Read the rest of this entry »

Three Simple Principles Of Natural Health
Natural health can be maintained and retained if we follow some common basic principles of natural health. These basic principles aren’t difficult or cumbersome to follow but they require a strong will power and a keen desire to stay close to nature. These simple principles must be adopted before our body looses its status of being healthy. If we cannot follow these most common simple principles of natural health care now, then it would not be possible for us in future especially when some serious illness overtakes our healthy body system.
Our modern lifestyle today is one of the biggest enemy of our health and natural body system. Today we have developed a social structure which is unhealthy not only for the society but also for natural health of our body system. Here are three common well known principles of natural health which are seldom followed today, but this doesn’t mean these principles don’t stand today or they have been abandoned by our body.
Disturbed Natural Sleeping Pattern : A naturally sound sleep as per law of nature provides a number of positive health benefits to our body. We cannot count these but it works on complexion and beauty, energy and vitality, mental health and relaxation, improving appetite and digestion, overall health and happiness to name a few. Clock of our body system is naturally configured with nature’s natural clock i.e., at night our body tends to rest or sleep and in day after sunrise it is configured to work or do its job. Today our unhealthy lifestyle tends to artificially reconfigure this natural clock. Our modern habits and unnatural sleeping patterns are responsible for a number of modern health problems. Today we work when its natural for our body to sleep or rest and we sleep or rest when it natural time to work.
Unnatural and unhealthy eating patterns: Our eating habits have also changed with time. I’ll not be discussing poor nutrition and poor and unhealthy quality of food that we have in this. Today we eat as and when we have time or wish to eat. We eat food without a natural urge or appetite for eating. Even if the quality of food that we eat is best and organically produced, requirements of our body today due to modern lifestyle are not the same as they used to be some times back. Finding the Right Exercise Treadmill
Tips and tricks on choosing the best exercise treadmill – When shopping for an exercise treadmill you have to invest a little time and effort in finding the exercise machine that will work best for you.
No one wants to work hard exercising on a machine that is not producing the best results and this is why your chosen exercise treadmill has to fit your demands perfectly!
This is why a little research before you buy becomes a necessity as an informed buyer is a smart buyer, as you already know. Making the right selection depends on various factors, such as the exercise treadmill type you want, how much it costs, what kind of fitness program do you want to use it for and so on.
Main functions of the exercise treadmill
In other words, what do you want to accomplish with it? Are you trying to put on some muscle, or is burning excess fat your main priority? Which areas of the body are you going to exercise the most? Do you want a whole body exercise treadmill or one that is focused on leg muscle development or upper chest improvements?
If muscle building is your priority, go for an exercise machine that allows you to do heavy lifting and has less aerobic workout involved. Burning fat, on the other hand, requires an exercise treadmill that involves aerobics and a cardio workout, combined with increased repetition numbers and low weights.
Main benefits of an exercise treadmill
According to your personal needs, you should get information on various models and cut them from the list as you find less compatibility with your goals.
Your final choice should be an exercise treadmill that is the closest to your expectations and that allows you to accomplish at least 90% of your initial set goals. Of course, the price of the treadmill might also come into play as a decisive argument. How to Buy Home Gym Equipments
While building a good home gym can cost more than a membership in the short term, over the course of your use of the equipment you will find working out at home to be much cheaper.
So how do you know what kind of equipment to buy in order to outfit your home gym? Planning your home gym is really based on four factors: your goals, level of commitment, the amount of room you have for equipment and the amount you can spend on your gym.
When choosing what exercise equipment to buy for you home gym, remember that if you start off with the basics you can always add additional equipment later on. This is better than buying exercise equipment that will later be used as a jacket hanger. A very expensive one at that!
Of course you don’t want to plan to buy a weight bench, treadmill and exercise bike if your workout space is the corner of your living room, you can’t afford any of it and you really just want to train to run a 5K. If you can’t afford or don’t have room for the equipment, or if it doesn’t meet your fitness goals, you aren’t likely to use it.
So let’s look first at your fitness goals and current level of activity. If you’re starting from scratch, both physically and equipment-wise, you’ll want to start slowly, maybe with some barbells in light weights, a yoga mat for stretching and doing other exercises on the floor, and maybe an exercise bike or a treadmill. Now would not be the time to invest in an elliptical machine or a strange piece of equipment you’ve never used before (really, there’s never a good time to invest in equipment you’ve never used).
On the other hand, if you’ve been working out a gym and suddenly have extra room in your house (say a child just left for college and you’d like to take over his room) you know what kind of equipment you like to use, so whether it’s a treadmill, a rower, or a Read the rest of this entry »
Computers and Fitness – Software For Keeping Fit
For as long as anyone can remember, computers have been used as tools to conduct work or to entertain. However, thanks to the huge amount of interest drummed up by the Nintendo Wii home video game console, and their award-winning Wii Fit video games, more and more computer software manufacturers are taking a look at the need for fitness-related software. The question that many people are asking is, How can a home computer duplicate the unique interface developed by the Wii through their wireless remote controllers and the Wii Balance Board? Let’s take a look at how your home computer can help you stay in shape this year.
For years, fitness software for your PC was simply diagnostic in nature. You could use these programs to record how many sit-ups you did that day, how many calories you took in, and what your projected goals should be. The result of such software research is Runner’s Log and Cyclist’s Log. These easy-to-use programs originally started out for the Palm Pilot, so a runner or cyclist could record what they did as they were in the thick of it. The software has proven to be so successful, however, that a port was created for the PC and the Mac. You can do everything mentioned above, as well as create graphics, charts, and print-outs of your progress day to day or week to week. Best of all, this program, and the other programs in this series, are shareware, which means they are absolutely free to try and use.
Obviously, most of the top fitness programs available aren’t going to be free, however, many are worth the investment. A good example is Yourself! Fitness. This software suite simulates what it is like to have your own personal trainer, but at a fraction of the cost. Oftentimes, when asked, people will list having a personal trainer as the number one reason why they joined a gym. With Yourself! Fitness, you won’t need to. The workouts here are customizable, dynamic, and a lot of fun. There is even a nutritional aspect to this software, as well, which ensures you are doing more than just sit-ups and push-ups.
Since more and more people are using Blackberries and iPhones these days, many computer companies are rushing to get applications built for these portable devices. A quick search of fitness-related iPhone applications reveals quite a selection, including a hilarious and often head-shaking version called Restaurant Nutrition. This program pulls back the curtain on every value meal at every fast food chain in the United States. Many of us give into fast food during a moment of weakness, but with Restaurant Nutrition sitting on our iPhone, at least we can order the items that have the least amount of fat, and believe it or not, it usually isn’t the salads.
Staying fit in the early 21st century is easier than ever with these amazing and fun to use applications for computer systems everywhere.
How To Choose The Best Exercise Treadmill
So, you’ve decided to buy an exercise treadmill to help give your body the cardiovascular workout it needs. But buying an exercise treadmill is actually harder than using one. With so many treadmills to choose from and with prices ranging from $500 to over $4,000, how do you choose the best exercise treadmill?
First thing to do is to decide where to put a new exercise treadmill. Treadmills are large pieces of exercise equipment, so you’ll need to make sure you’ll have enough room for the machine and for you to comfortably use it – remember most exercise treadmills come with incline, so you need to make sure there’s headroom. Take down measurement of the space you have so that you can make sure the exercise treadmill is going to fit.
I know it sounds silly, buy will your floor take the weight? It’ll have to support your weight plus the weight of the exercise treadmill, which can weight anything up to 400 lbs.
Before you head out to the store, put on your gym clothes and training shoes, as you’ll want to try out the machines.
If there’s one determining factor in how long an exercise treadmill is going to last it’s the motor. Whatever budget you have look for an exercise treadmill with a good, large motor. You also need to understand about horsepower – as that’s how motors are rated. There are two ratings; peak duty rating and continuous duty rating. You’ll always see the peak duty advertised on the treadmill but it’s the continuous rating, stamped directly on the motor that really determines its quality and durability. For walking purposes an HP rating of 1.5 is sufficient, for running get a larger motor.
The next thing to look at is the treadbelt. This is the belt that rotates as you run. As you can imagine, the treadbelt takes quite a bit of punishment. Cheap exercise treadmills come with 1-ply treadbelts, mid-price come with 2-ply and the best exercise treadmills come with 4-ply. The longer the tread belt the better. For walking it should be at least 48″ long and for running about 58″ is sufficient. Also get a treadbelt with a minimum width of 17″; the industry norm on mid-priced and up is 20″.
The thickness of the walking deck needs some consideration too. The thickness of the deck determines Read the rest of this entry »
Fitness Expert Reveals How You Can Actually Lose Weight During The Holidays
Well, it’s that time of year that most of us either love or **** (or a little of both).
The holiday season is upon us and although you may be likely to pack on some pounds during this time of bountiful food, with a little planning, that doesn’t have to be the case.
Below you’ll find some simple tips from personal trainer and fitness expert Shawn Lebrun that will help you stay thin through the holiday season.
1. Nibble on food throughout the day.
If you graze and snack on a little here and there all day, you will not build up that chance to be extremely hungry.
Instead of eating one large meal, which ends with an unbuttoning of the pants to let your extended stomach go free, try having 2 or 3 smaller meals throughout the day.
Not to mention, eating smaller snacks throughout the day keeps your metabolism burning faster.
Two or three hours before the “sit-down dinner, snack on some fruit, some carrot and celery sticks, or any other lower calorie foods. Then, when it’s dinner time, you won’t be as hungry.
2. Skip the gravy, dressings, and high-calorie condiments.
If you’re cautious about calories but still want to enjoy the main Thanksgiving feast, skip the gravy and fatty dressings.
If the turkey is too dry without some type of sauce, use ketchup or a low-fat gravy. Many times, the dressings and condiments are worse culprits than the foods you put them on.
3. Eat more vegetables with your meal.
Instead of loading up the potatoes and stuffing, choose to have more vegetables with your turkey.
On a calorie basis, you’re better off eating a larger serving of veggies than you are carbs like potatoes, rice, stuffing, or bread.
4. Drink a lot of water throughout the day.
This will help with hunger throughout the day. Water is a great appetite suppressant and if you’re constantly sipping all day, you will not find yourself starving.
5. Go outside and be active
Sitting around the house all day watching T.V., smelling the food cooking will keep you salivating and your stomach growling.
Take a pre-dinner walk with the family or the dog. Go to the park, watch the kids play ball. If you’re really motivated, go for a jog/run before dinner or later in the evening.
Being active will not only help burn off more calories than sitting in front of the tube, it will also keep you from being in “eating mode” from the kitchen aromas.
7. Have a smaller dessert
Don’t skip dessert, just moderate it. Have a small sliver of pie with a larger serving of Fat-Free Cool Whip or other non-dairy topping.
Again, my feeling is to enjoy yourself and eat a little of anything you want. The holidays are not a time to feel deprived. They are meant to be happy, spending time with friends and family.
If you’re dedicated to being in shape, one day will not ruin your results.
